TestDisk & PhotoRec is a package to help recover lost or damage partitions on a drive or fix disk that simple will not boot again and see to have developed a fault. It is possible to accidentally delete a partition (deleting the wrong one by mistake) but it can also happen that malware or a virus can maliciously delete a partition as well or make a disk unbootable. The TestDisk app will run checks on the drive to see if there are any errors on the partition table and then set about repairing it. The master boot record can also be remedied if this is also found to be incorrect and causing a boot up problem. Works with numerous types of file systems across Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD, Sun, Unix and Novell.

PhotoRec is a File Recovery program designed to recover lost files; including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks, CDRom and lost pictures from digital camera memory (thus, its Photo Recovery name). PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it can still find files even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted (overwritten data, of course, can not be recovered).
By default, PhotoRec restores a wide variety of file formats. However, some users might only need to recover files of a specific format. For example, users who need to recover lost photo files might only need to restore JPEG and PNG images. You can configure PhotoRec to only recover files of one specific format as follows.
PhotoRec is a pretty good freeware data recovery tool, but there are decent alternatives. Tenorshare 4DDig, for Windows 10/8.1/8/7, is among the best alternative data recovery utilities, which you can restore more than 1,000 deleted file formats with. This software can restore lost data on HDD and SSD drives, USB sticks, SD cards, and even DVDs.
4DDig has a better UI design than QPhotoRec. However, the biggest difference between those software packages is that 4DDiG displays a preview window after scanning from which users can select specific files to recover. PhotoRec will just recover all the files it can restore for selected formats in a folder without providing any preview. And 4DDig is quite easier to use than PhotoRec.
It has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, It can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find the Test Disk app a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.TestDisk can find lost partitions for all of these file systems:

must be for experts because i had difficult time trying to locate missing/corrupted partition. Problem is it shows partition sector size + start/end sectors and not size in GB so i'm looking at a bunch of numbers that don't mean anything to me compared to usual view of a file explorer or typical partition manager program. Also didn't show partition names for me (like WinXP C:, Media Files D:, etc) except for the linux ones for some reason.
Seriously great utilities. Helped recover several GBs of files from an external drive that became unrecognized in Windows.Used the image creation tool to first create an image, then used PhotoRec to recover the contents (probably could have skipped the image creation part in hindsight). The only downside to the process is PhotoRec takes forever to complete, and was the filenames were lost.

I ideally wanted the files with names, however getting the files without name is better than nothing. They are numbered evidently where they were in the partition. I will be exploring more to see if I can still get them all at a later date. I have taken a full image of the NAS drive too.
With TestDisk, you can recover HFS, exFAT, ext2, ext3, ext4, HFS, JFS, FAT32, NTFS, and many more filesystems. But what if the data you lost to a damaged partition is a media file? Fortunately, there is a solution for that as well.
